As I mentioned in my last blog of 2018. I love a World Cup year. WELL, 2019 will be a FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP year in France from June 7th until July 7th, played all over France from Le Havre, Rennes, Valenciennes up north to NIce and Montpellier down south with Paris, Lyon, Reims and Grenoble in the middle. France open at Parc des Princes v Korea Republic on the 7th with both semi-finals and the the final slated for Parc Olympique in Lyon.in early July. Tickets are very affordable from about 10 Euros for the early stages.
Out with the old and in with the new this New Year but actually, the very first match that I attended was last Saturday 5th January between possibly the NEWEST and the OLDEST clubs in the world. In 2018 Ossett Albion, the Unicorns, and Ossett Town, the Rams combined to form Ossett United the SHEEPICORNS. Great crest and great nickname. The new club hosted THE WORLD'S FIRST, Sheffield FC who kicked off in 1857, at INGFIELD STADIUM, where Town played and conveniently across the street from Ossett Bus Station, halfway between Dewsbury and Wakefield about 7 miles in either direction, and both rugby league strongholds.. With 21,000 inhabitants, i'ts the largest town in Yorkshire without a railway station.
Ossett had many coal mines and heavy woollen mills but now proudly boasts 2 breweries, Ossett Breweries and Bob's Brewing Company.
Way back in 867 AD on 21st March, King Osbert died here after being badly wounded fighting The Heathen Army of Vikings at York. In the 1086 AD Doomseday Book coordinated by William the Conquerer who invaded in 1066 AD. Ossett is mentioned.
It was the 11th v the 5th placed teams in the Evo-Stick East League but United have been climbing up the league after losing 3-0 in the away fixture at the Coach & Horses in Dronfield, and get great support at their 2,000 capacity home and have an award winning 32 page official programme on sale for £2.00. It does not mention their ladies team who play at DIMPLEWELLS, Albion's old HQ which is being upgraded with a new 4 G surface and other facilities. Did you know that there are only TWO womens clubs in the country that play at their own stadiums? Manchester City and Ossett United. All the others... Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool etc 'borrow' other clubs stadiums..
Ingfield needs to upgrade its floodlights. The only goal of the match was for the home side in the 6th minute, but I sat at the far end and it was less than clear on an overcast afternoon. Half time at this friendly club and we gathered in the tea room for a free cuppa and the one sandwich that was left. Next door is a very nce bar, but both rooms had many large screen televisions to review the FA Cup dramas.
Have a great UNITED future.SHEEPICORNS.
