We have had Don Alfedo with us for 88 years and the Buenos Aires born Real Madrid legend has been a true star, inspiration and trend setter for The Beautiful Game.
I first heard about him as a young lad when he had transferred to Millionairos of Bogota, Colombia where he played in an unsanctioned league. It was his transfer to Real Madrid which put him on the map as both he and the younger Francisco 'Paco' Gento both played in THE FIRST FIVE EUROPEAN CUP FINALS, WINNING THEM ALL, starting in 1956.
I remember a rainy and what seemed foggy night at The Parc de Princes when the Madrilenos defeated STADE DE REIMS 4-3 in the final, refereed by English tefereeing legend Arthur Ellis. On my 7" black and white TV set I watched the second half-I don't think they showed the whole match. Madrid had defeated AC Milan 5-4 on aggregate and Reims took care of HIBERNIAN of Edinburgh 3-0. in the semi-finals.
The French were 2-0 up inside 10 minutes but with goals by Di Stefano and Rial they had levelled it up by half time. Reims took the lead again through Michel Hidalgo, later a successful national team coach of France, but Marquitos and Rial scored to make it 4-3. The attendance was 38,000.
He played 6 times for Argentina and 31 times for Spain where he scored 23 goals. He scored 216 times for Real in 282 matches and managed 12 clubs in Spain, Portugal and Argentina including two spells at Real. he never graced the World Cup finals. In 1950 and 1954 Argentina did not enter. For Spain in 1958 they didn't make the finals in Sweden and by Chile 62 he was injured.
ANOTHER ARREST IN RIO. RAY WHELAN made the perp walk out of the COPACABANA PALACE hotel on Avenida Atlantica where the FIFA big wigs are staying. he was the former agent for Sir Bobby Charlton and ran his Soccer Schools before Manchester United ran their own schools. He is an executive of MATCH HOSPITALITY which puts together very expensive corporate packages from their Swiss HQ. One of the principles is Philippe Blatter, nephew of the GOD KING President Sepp Blatter. It is a subsiduery of MATCH GROUP Manchester owned by two Mexican tycoons. He was caught up in OPERATION JULES RIMET. and locked up in jail.
WHELAN, age 64, was part of a ring hoping to scalp World Cup Final tickets for $16,000 each. The police had tapped 50,000 phone calls. Of 3 million purchasable tickets for Brazil 2014, 445,500 were allocated to MATCH.
In December 2009 in Cape Town Convention Centre after the draw for the 2010 Finals I gatecrashed a MATCH HOSPITALITY meeting, ate all the fine food and drink and then complained how their compulsory control of ALL CAPE TOWN accommodation was hurting local hotels. I got asked to leave but 3 months later they DUMPED 400,000 room nights back to the local hotels after they failed to market and sell them.
